ALSTOM AND SYSTEM STORE CREATE THE “PIT STOP” STORAGE STANDARD

To accommodate its new “Pit Stop maintenance” program, which has been put in place to improve the availability of trains to Virgin for its new improved timetable, Alstom looked to System Store Solutions Ltd to provide the perfect storage facility for its West Coast depots.

The “Pit Stop maintenance program” forms part of the new Alstom initiative to improve the performance of the trains on the West Coast Main Line for Virgin Trains.

Its focus has been on the areas of reliability and improving the efficiency of maintenance on the trains – in other words, to get an entire job done during downtime.

System Store Solutions was initially tasked to re-fit the Wolverhampton depot. One of Alstoms award winning West Coast sister depots, winning a National award for innovative maintenance control processes. The key requirement from Alstom was for System Store Solutions to design a solution that would provide tools at trackside for easy access in a clean work environment.

David Price, managing director of System Store Solutions’ design for the new installation included high visibility leaf door free standing tool cupboards with perforated back panels so tooling could be hung at the back of the unit, yet be easily visible to the user, due to the innovative system. “Fitted with tough transparent polycarbonate leaf doors for storing items such as tools, components and equipment, the high-visibility system will ease the time consuming process of tool tracking as now cabinets can be visually inspected with ease”, says David. “These new, extremely durable cabinets are in direct response to customer feedback”.

Workbenches were provided with laminate work tops plus pedestal cabinets for storage. Also provided were secure computer cabinets, specifically designed to protect PCs and terminals from damage. “System Store has provided us with a well manufactured and presentable system”, says Paul Crowley, lead buyer for Alstom. “The design and the installation were both handled extremely professionally providing us with a storage system that can easily be expanded on if required in the near future”, adds Paul. “Our key requirement has been achieved, providing a facility that allows the engineers easy access to trackside tools without the need for long, time consuming walks to and throw greatly reducing downtime”.

As one of the most innovative storage consultants and suppliers in the UK, System Store Solutions Ltd can make any application requirement possible. The company is the exclusive UK distributor of the Fami storage systems product range. Its success is founded on the expertise of its consultants and based on project management, consultation and technical advice. System Store Solutions has now secured a two year purchase agreement with Alstom and the installation provided at Wolverhampton has now become the company standard for the Alstom “Pit Stop maintenance” program. A further order has been secured at Alstoms’ Wembley depot for cabinets and other storage items from System Stores’ product range.
